Aari work blouses: what to know before you order

Aari work (also called maggam work) is hand embroidery done on a frame with a fine hooked needle. Zardozi threads, beads, stones and sequins are worked into the fabric, which is why aari blouses are the favourite for weddings and festivals.

1. Give it time

Heavy aari work is slow, careful handwork. For bridal blouses, place the order 3–4 weeks before the event. Lighter neckline or sleeve work can be done faster.

2. Decide where the work goes

Neckline only, neckline and sleeves, or the full back. More coverage means more time and a higher price. A heavily worked back with a simpler front looks elegant and saves cost.

3. Pick fabric that holds the work

Silk, raw silk and velvet hold heavy embroidery best. Very thin fabrics need a backing, which we add at the boutique.

4. Match the thread to the saree

Gold zari suits almost every silk saree. Silver or antique gold works for pastels. Bring your saree so we can match colours in person.
